The Ghosts of The Jolly

We had a Hot Cabinet at the back of the bar. As a couple of bar staff were serving, the tongs that were on top of the cabinet flew off. They didn't drop down, but rather they were thrown outwards.

You can see the doors in the video above open by themselves. I asked the manager why he hadn't closed the doors yet, and he replied "All closed and locked buddy".

I called him through and said, "No, they're not". So we looked on the security camera. This is what we found. All other doors were shut and locked and there was no draught running through the pub. Pretty much weirded us both out as we watched it.

You can see the liquid move in the pint glass before the glass topples. However, the wine glass, nor its liquid, is stationary at all times, ruling out any knocking of the table. I have permission from the couple to post this.

Looking in the bottom right corner of the video, you can see the glasses topple, just before the video cuts out.The staff member doesn't catch or go near the shelf and they topple from further back on the shelf.

There are many stories of ghosts in The jolly Sailor. Not all have been confirmed but we can only tell you what we have learned in our time at The Jolly.

The strange things that have actually happened to ourselves...

  • When we first moved into the pub we had to reside in our office as we were renovating the living quarters. I was in bed around 1:30am when I heard a man in his 60's coughing outside the room in the corridor by the toilets. My sceptical mind thought it was outside but it definitely came from the corridor.

We believe this to be the same man who frequents the Ladies Toilets. Known as a bit of a ladies' man, he has made his presence known to a few of the locals who will now not use the toilet!

  • The landlady was sleeping, again in our office, and she was woken up (again, at 1:30am) by a woman in her 60's stood over her. By the time she had woken fully, the woman had gone.

  • At the beginning of the first lockdown we cleaned all our B&B rooms and locked the doors. One of my jobs in lockdown was to fix a leaky toilet. About a month into lockdown I switched off the water, fixed the leak and then turned the water on the next morning.

As i passed B&B room 1, i heard a hissing sound. I grabbed the key, opened the door and found the cold tap in the bathroom on full, spraying water everywhere. I had a sharp word with the ghosts, asking them not to cost me money!!

  •  Recently (August to October 2020) we have had a lot of activity in our kitchen. The hot tap on our hand wash basin keeps turning itself on. It has done this several

times... once, when I was in the kitchen on my own cooking the breakfasts for the

guests. There have also been touches, windows being opened after we closed them

at end of service and voices. The chef and KP also saw a figure just outside

the kitchen door.

  • We have many other moments such as - moving keys, shattering glasses, moving chairs, touches on your back, visions of a blonde curly haired boy or girl in the kitchen and noises all around.

  • We have several spirits in The Jolly. We had a visit from a paranormal investigator who works at Bodmin Jail and she pointed them all out to us...

Please talk to us when you come in to find out who, and where, they are!

  • There has been activity in all the B&B rooms. One room had a woman come to me saying she felt someone get into bed behind her and then had weird and vivid dreams. She even drew me a picture of the figure in her dream.

Another reported that their phone and pen flipped off the desk whilst they were sitting watching TV.

There have been reports of lights flickering (I know it's an old building but we just had our 5 year electrical check and all was great), noises and sounds of chairs being moved downstairs at 3am (trust me - i'm NEVER in the pub at 3am!).

Come and ask us about the ghosts and hear the stories for yourself!
